First Flight, Grace and Harmony
Over the years I have had the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the best artists in the doll making world and one of those is Mark Dennis. He is well-known for his gravity defying sculptures and though I have only taken one class on sculpting torsos, I have read the articles in Doll Crafter and Costuming and have seen many of his works in person. I think after all of this his techniques have finally sunk into my head and this piece is a direct result of that. Grace and her daughter Harmony were made specifically for the Doll as Art Show at the Doll and Teddy Bear EXPO 2010. I also made three companion pieces, Joy, Faith and Hope. Their galleries can be seen by clicking on the photos below. Each of the figures are sculpted over a strong wire armature using a mixture of polymer clays. They are hand-painted with heat set oil paints and their eyes are individually made before being sculpted into their heads. They are all wearing the same antique lace, though each dress differs a little from the others. Their hair is tibetan lamb's wool and their wings are silk.
